ORGANISATIONAL PROFILE
Synergy Elderly care is a non-profit, non-Governmental organisation, registered by the registrar of companies, in the year 2017, with registration number 2533 and currently pursuing registration with the National Registration Bureau Reg. No. INDR140431389NB.
The aim of Synergy Elderly Care is to work with the elderly people in Uganda and support them to age gracefully and successfully, while not compromising their traditional, and social-cultural values. We aim at supporting families in taking care of their aged parents and grandparents, and work to minimize and eliminate all sorts of discrimination and abuse of the elderly in Uganda.
The organization stems from an academic project, on Aging and Disability that has been conducted in Wakiso district among other districts in the country, in which findings revealed a great need and an existing gap in care for the elderly. Among others the study revealed that the traditional care systems in which the families, kin and neighborhoods took care of the elderly is increasingly getting strained, while formal care for the same group is not yet available in the country. There is therefore a significant care gap left by the consequences of development and the so-called modernization as children are increasingly going to school, and women are increasingly taking up jobs in formal and informal sectors, yet the two have for years, been known to be the greatest care takers of the elderly in Uganda and Africa in general. These positive developments therefore need to be backed up with long term and concrete plans on how to cover the care gaps left for vulnerable categories of people especially the elderly.
Objectives
i. To support families in ensuring adequate and sustainable care for the elderly
ii. Lobby and advocate for improved living conditions of the elderly in Uganda
iii. Increase access to basic health care, improved nutrition and other basic necessities of life for the elderly
iv. Raise awareness on the increasing need to take care and support the elderly in the country
